A ship date for the assistant Apple has been promising
Apple will release iOS 27 on 14 September, and with it the public debut of Siri AI, the rebuilt version of its assistant, Engadget reported. iPadOS 27, watchOS 27 and macOS 27 arrive the same day.
The detail that matters beyond Apple’s own ecosystem is where the assistant comes from. Apple trained Siri AI using Google’s Gemini models. That makes 14 September the date a Gemini-derived system reaches hundreds of millions of phones under someone else’s brand.
Not every iPhone gets it
Siri AI is limited to the iPhone 15 Pro and newer. The iPhone 17 line and the iPhone Air get additional capabilities, which Engadget attributes to stronger on-device processing. On tablets, support is restricted to the current iPad mini and iPad Air and to iPad Pro models with an M1 chip or later.

That cut-off is a statement about the architecture. A hybrid assistant splits work between the device and the cloud, and the hardware floor is set by what Apple wants to keep local rather than by what the model needs overall.
What the arrangement with Google actually is
Google Cloud chief executive Thomas Kurian confirmed the partnership publicly in April, saying Google was “collaborating with Apple as their preferred cloud provider to develop the next generation of Apple Foundation Models based on Gemini technology.” Under the arrangement, processing runs on Apple-controlled servers under Apple’s security standards, which is the mechanism Apple points to when it says Google does not get access to user data. Reported estimates put the deal at roughly $1 billion a year; neither company has confirmed terms.

Early impressions, and the number that will matter
Engadget said that in its early testing the assistant “was actually capable of answering complex questions and carrying out multi-step prompts” — a low bar in the abstract, and the exact bar Siri has failed at for a decade. The release also brings changes to Apple’s Liquid Glass design language, new child safety features and general performance work.
What to watch after 14 September is the failure rate in ordinary use. An assistant that handles multi-step requests in a demo and drops them on a commute is the version users will judge, and it is the version that determines whether a Gemini-derived Siri changes anyone’s habits.
